NATO calls Russia 'biggest and immediate threat' with new strategic concept

Xinhua News Agency, Madrid, June 29 (Reporter Zhang Zhang Liu Xinyu) Leaders of NATO member states approved the "NATO 2022 Strategic Concept" at a summit in Madrid, Spain on the 29th, calling Russia the "biggest and immediate threat" to NATO.

This new strategic concept assesses NATO's security environment and sets tasks to guide NATO's development over the next decade.

The document says NATO has three core missions for the next decade: deterrence and defense, crisis prevention and management, and cooperative security.

Russia is the "biggest and immediate threat" to the security of NATO members and to peace and stability in the Euro-Atlantic region.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Ryabkov told the media that day that NATO regards Russia as a strategic security threat, "but this is not a fact, it is NATO that poses a threat to Russia."

Russia condemns NATO's irresponsible policies that undermine the European security architecture, and NATO's decision at the Madrid summit will not affect Russia's policy.

The Strategic Concept is the programmatic document that guides the development of NATO.

In 1991, the NATO Rome Summit adopted the "New Strategic Concept of the Alliance".

Since then, NATO has updated its strategic concept several times.

In the strategic concept adopted in 2010, NATO defined Russia as a "partner" and implemented a policy of deterrence, defense and dialogue towards Russia.

The two-day NATO summit in Madrid opened on the 29th.

In the past few days, people and people of insight in many places around the world have questioned and criticized NATO as a product of the Cold War and its constantly breaking nature and sphere of influence.

The Spanish Peace Forum convened thousands of people in Madrid on the 26th to participate in a parade against NATO and against increasing military spending. Representatives from Spain, Germany, the United States, Cuba and other countries and some international organizations participated in the parade.
