Lithuania passes law banning Russian gas imports

Lithuania's parliament passed a law on Monday banning the import of Russian gas, a move the country is making to reduce its energy dependence on Moscow since Russian forces began their invasion of Ukraine.

Lithuania, a Baltic state that is a member of the European Union and NATO, in the spring stopped buying Russian gas that it had been importing via pipelines or a liquefied natural gas terminal.

Also, under the new law, any country that poses a threat to national security is prohibited from using the Lithuanian natural gas transportation system or LNG terminal.

But the law, in return, allows Russian companies to use Lithuanian infrastructure to transport gas to Kaliningrad, the Russian enclave between Lithuania and Poland on the Baltic Sea.
