For the first time in history, a woman, Yaël Braun-Pivet, was elected President of the National Assembly on Tuesday after two rounds of voting which marked the start of the sixteenth legislature of the Fifth Republic.

It was the dean of the deputies, José Gonzalez (RN), 79, who kicked off the work of the new Assembly, before pronouncing the constitution of the office of age, composed of the six youngest deputies.

The point, in pictures, on this return to school.

  • 6:50 p.m .: Yaël Braun-Pivet has just become the first woman president of the National Assembly.

The macronist climbs to the perch to loud applause, after an effervescent inaugural session on Tuesday.

  • Earlier in the afternoon, upon their arrival at the Assembly, deputies from all sides expressed their emotion, such as Louis Boyard (LFI, Nupes), 21, one of the youngest at the Bourbon Palace.

  • Or Julien Bayou, co-president of the Europe Ecologie-Les Verts group with Cyrielle Chatelain at the National Assembly.

  • The session opens at 3:00 p.m.

Olivier Véran, in charge of Relations with Parliament, sits alone on the bench of ministers.

  • As the regulations require, it is the oldest member who presides: José Gonzalez, 79, elected RN of Bouches-du-Rhône.

Moved, Gonzalez stumbles on certain names of deputies.

Then his voice chokes when he talks about Algeria, his native land from which he was "ripped" in 1962, at independence.

“I left a part of my France there,” says this pied-noir born in Oran, with accents from French Algeria.

  • Under the watchful eyes of the president of the National Rally group in the National Assembly, Marine Le Pen.

  • Elected officials from the Nupes left castigate a "shame" or express their "disgust".

  • The deputy of the North Fabien Roussel (PCF Nupes) is hyper concentrated!

At his side, Sandrine Rousseau (EELV Nupes), MP for Paris.

  • The deputies are placed in alphabetical order for this first sitting.

  • This sometimes leads to funny situations.

  • Here, far-right deputy Sébastien Chenu (RN) rubs shoulders with Sophia Chikirou, Alexis Corbière and Eric Coquerel, all three LFI Nupes.

  • Or Julien Odoul, deputy National Rally of Yonne, installed next to Danièle Obono, deputy La France insoumise - Nupes de Paris.

Both having radically opposed political positions.

    The good atmosphere!

  • The vote for the presidency of the National Assembly begins.

  • The youngest of the Assembly, the separatist Polynesian Tematai Le Gayic, 21, secretary for the ballot, does not take his eyes off the ballot box.

He wears lavalava, a traditional Pacific outfit.

  • “How long and winding is the path to equality between men and women”, underlines Yaël Braun-Pivet, after his election in the second round.

In the gallery, one of his five children is in tears.
