It is the result of 15 years of work.

130 years after having disappeared in France after the slaughter of the last two individuals, the first white-tailed eagle has been reintroduced in the Alps.

This bird born in an animal park took off in Sciez (Haute-Savoie) this Tuesday morning, reports France 3 Auvergne Rhône-Alpes.

Three more will follow soon after.

A program and equipment

It is one of the largest raptors in Europe, measuring between 190 and 250 cm.

A reintroduction program in line with the National Action Plan of the Ministry of the Environment has been launched.

In particular, aviaries have been designed for the occasion.

They allow the chicks to take their first flight and return to their parents.

The young eagles are indeed unable to feed themselves for a month after their flight.

This is the first time that a member of the species born in captivity has been released in Europe.

Within a year, 80 other individuals of the species should be reintroduced into the wild.
