The court considers that the transport, which would be needed to transport the gold from the mine to the company's concentrator in Svartliden, would entail too great safety risks for road users and too great disturbances for those who live in close proximity to the road.

Freelance journalist and author Arne Müller, who monitors developments in the Swedish mining industry, was surprised by the court's ruling.

- This is the first time, to my knowledge, that the Land and Environment Court says no to a new mine, he says and continues:

- The mining of gold produces large carbon dioxide emissions.

The mine can make it difficult for reindeer herding

Mining and transport are also considered to be difficult for the reindeer herding industry in the area, which has previously been strained due to several wind farms, among other things.

Nor has the court been able to guarantee that the activity could be conducted in an environmentally acceptable manner.

Because the basis for assessing the environmental impact on watercourses has been insufficient.

- Authorities have directed extensive criticism of the data and the company has had to supplement its application several times, says Arne Müller.
