Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, food safety and nutrition and health work have made positive progress——

From "Eat Safe" to "Eat Healthy"

On June 27, the National Health and Medical Commission held a press conference to introduce the progress of food safety and nutrition and health work since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.

Liu Jinfeng, director of the Department of Food Safety Standards and Monitoring and Evaluation of the National Health and Health Commission, introduced that since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, my country has fulfilled its duties of food safety standards, risk monitoring and evaluation in accordance with the law, implemented the requirements of "the most rigorous standards", and established a great food industry. Positive progress has been made in various aspects of food safety and nutrition and health.

Build the most rigorous standard system in an all-round way, so you can eat with confidence and have rules to follow.

Food safety standards are mandatory technical regulations, which are basically followed by producers and operators, and are also an important basis for supervision and law enforcement.

In the past 10 years, a national standards review committee with nearly 400 experts from 17 departments and units has been established. Adhering to the scientific basis of rigorous risk assessment, it has established a standards development system with open and transparent procedures, extensive participation of experts in multiple fields, and scientific and authoritative review. As well as the standard tracking and evaluation mechanism of in-depth cooperation between the whole society and multiple departments, the practicability and credibility of the standard are continuously improved.

Up to now, 1,419 national food safety standards have been issued, including more than 20,000 indicators.

Efforts will be made to strengthen risk monitoring and assessment capabilities, and timely early warning to maintain health.

Four monitoring networks for food contamination and harmful factors, food-borne disease monitoring and a national food safety risk assessment system have been established at the national, provincial, municipal and county levels.

Monitoring of food contamination and harmful factors has covered 99% of counties and districts, and food-borne disease monitoring has covered more than 70,000 medical institutions at all levels.

The food categories for monitoring of food contaminants and harmful factors cover all 32 categories of foods such as grain and oil, vegetables and fruits, eggs and milk, meat and poultry, and aquatic products that are consumed by Chinese residents on a daily basis.

Actively practice the concept of big food, and help the transformation from "eating safely" to "eating healthy".

Vigorously promote the national nutrition plan and the Healthy China Reasonable Diet Action.

Strengthen the popularization and education of the general population and special key groups such as infants and young children, pregnant women, and the elderly, and extensively carry out reasonable dietary guidance services.

Organize the construction of a number of nutritious and healthy restaurants, canteens, schools and other pilot demonstrations.

Through social co-governance and co-construction, the masses will be guaranteed access to nutrition knowledge, nutrition products and professional services, and the accessibility and convenience of food and nutrition places will be improved.

Liu Jinfeng said that the food safety of students is the focus of the whole society.

The National Health and Health Commission has always prioritized campus food safety and the prevention of student food poisoning.

First, make school food safety and food-borne disease monitoring an important part of national food safety risk monitoring.

The second is to improve the school food safety risk prevention and control system around key links such as procurement, storage, processing, distribution, and meal supply.

The third is to organize thematic propaganda and education activities to mobilize the whole society to protect campus food safety.

Overall, the food safety situation on campus is stable and improving, the incidence of food-borne diseases is on the decline, no major food safety incidents involving the campus have occurred, and no deaths have occurred.

In recent years, through the organization and implementation of the national nutrition plan and the reasonable diet action, the national nutrition and health status has been significantly improved.

The monitoring results show that the nutritional and health status of Chinese residents has continued to improve, and the urban-rural disparity has gradually narrowed.

In 2020, the average height of residents aged 18-44 in my country is 169.7 cm for men and 158.0 cm for women, an increase of 1.2 cm and 0.8 cm respectively compared with 2015.

Ding Gangqiang, director of the Institute of Nutrition and Health of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said that my country has launched a nutrition improvement program for rural compulsory education students since 2011, providing nutritious meal subsidies for students in poor rural areas.

Disease control departments at all levels cooperate closely with education departments, and carry out monitoring and evaluation year by year. It shows that the anemia rate of students has dropped from 16.7% in 2012 to 11.4% in 2021, and the growth retardation rate of students has dropped from 8.0% in 2012 to 2021. 2.5%.
