The US military said in a statement that it had carried out a strike in the Syrian province of Idlib on Monday, targeting a "prominent leader" of a group allied with Al-Qaeda, as the statement put it.

The strike targeted Abu Hamza al-Yamani, the "prominent leader" of the al-Qaeda-allied Guardians of Religion group, while he was traveling alone on a motorbike.

The Central Command of the US Army considered that "the killing of this commander will disrupt al-Qaeda's ability to carry out attacks against innocent people around the world."

According to the US statement, which was quoted by Reuters, "a preliminary review did not indicate any civilian casualties."

Reuters also quoted the Syrian Civil Defense as saying that a man was killed shortly before midnight after his motorcycle was targeted by two missiles, adding that he transferred the body to the Forensic Medicine Department in Idlib city.
