The alarm about the fire came in just before 6 pm on Monday evening and seven units from the rescue service were sent to the scene.

- It is a two-storey house of the older kind that burns with open flames, says Tony Bergelind who is an alarm operator at the rescue service in Kalmar.

One person is feared missing

At around 7 pm, smoke divers were on site to search the building, but that work was stopped shortly afterwards.

- It is unclear why the smoke diving has been stopped, says Tony Bergelind.

The person living in the house is feared missing in the fire and has not yet been found.

- The latest status report is that external extinguishing is being carried out, says Tony Bergelind.

Risk of spread

Is there a risk of the fire spreading?

- There are nearby houses about 20 meters away so the risk is there, says Tony Bergelind.

Shortly after 9 pm it was still burning, electricians were working to cut off the power to the property.

It is not yet known what may have caused the fire.
