A 23-year-old man, suspected of having uttered threats against the faithful of one of the main mosques in Lille, was placed in pre-trial detention pending his trial in correctional court on July 27, indicated, on Friday, the public ministry to AFP.

This man had been arrested Thursday at his home in Faches-Thumesnil and placed in police custody as part of an investigation "for death threats against a group of people belonging to a religion and apology for terrorism", recalls the prosecution of Lille in its press release.

This arrest followed the reporting via the Pharos online platform of a video published on the Telegram application, "in which an individual" expressed "his intention to commit an attack against the Lille Sud mosque", according to the prosecution. .


“A second sequence relating to the Christchurch massacre committed in 2019 in New Zealand” was also reported.

Quickly identified, the suspect admitted during the hearings "to be the author of the threats against the Lille-Sud mosque" and explained "his gesture by habitual and excessive consumption of alcohol".

“Without real political or religious conviction, the respondent does not claim to be extreme right but seems at the very least interested in discussion groups linked to these movements”, underlines the prosecution.
