“Of course, Ukraine will never be a member of the European Union in the short term.

Firstly, there is not a single prerequisite, not a single condition, compliance with any requirement for joining the European Union,” she said on the air of the Belarusian TV channel STV.

Matvienko also added that the European Union will not accept a country with a “completely destroyed economy” into the union.

According to the speaker of the Federation Council, if theoretically Ukraine becomes a member of the EU, then "it would be possible to immediately put an end to the European Union, because it would collapse both economically and politically in a short time."

Earlier, journalist Christoph Schiltz, in his article for the German newspaper Die Welt, said that the status of a candidate member of the European Union for Ukraine is a "dummy" that does not bind Europe to anything.

On June 23, the EU summit agreed on the status of accession candidates for Ukraine and Moldova.
