A strong controversy occurred following the announcement of the results of the last Ramadan crescent survey, but it seems that it will not be repeated in the next Dhu al-Hijjah;

It is expected that the majority of Arab countries will agree on a single date for the blessed Eid al-Adha this year 1443 AH corresponding to 2022 AD.

But to understand this, we need to know the nature of the moon's rotation around the Earth;

When we raise our heads to the sky at night, we see the moon in multiple phases such as crescent, humpback, quadrature or full moon. These phases are nothing but a reflection of sunlight on the moon, and the difference between them is a difference in the moon’s orbit around the Earth as well.

You can easily notice this cycle from your home, just go up to the roof of the house at the same time every day, and contemplate the position of the moon in the sky, you will find that it changes its place as if it jumps in the sky day after day away from the sun after its setting.

Now let's suppose, theoretically, that we can turn back time day by day, which means that the moon will return to stand next to the sun completely, and in astronomy that case is called "the conjunction moment."

After the moment of pairing, the moon begins to move away from the sun in the sky little by little, and we cannot see it easily at first because it is close to the sun, but after about 14 hours from the moment of pairing, any naked eyes can see the moon in the sky after sunset.

Specialists from Islamic legal bodies go out to search for the crescent of Ramadan after sunset of sighting, which is on the 29th of the hijri month.

The requirements of vision differ from one country to another. Some see that it is a vision with the eyes, some add telescopes and their various technologies, and a third group says that astronomical calculation alone is sufficient, and all of them are interpretations of the idea of vision, and each of them finds what it recommends religiously.

It is possible to see the crescent of Dhul-Hijjah throughout the Arab world after sunset on June 29 this year (International Astronomy Center)

Eid al-Adha date

According to the International Astronomy Center, the central conjunction (the central New Moon) will occur at dawn on Wednesday, June 29, at 05:52 Mecca time.

As for the countries that will go out to see the crescent on June 29, such as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Morocco and Jordan, this leaves an appropriate period of time to see the crescent with astronomical instruments after sunset on the day of sighting;

Therefore, it is likely that these countries will announce that Thursday - corresponding to June 30th - is the first of Dhul-Hijjah.

But there are other countries that will go out to search for the crescent of the month of Dhul-Hijjah on June 28, such as Qatar and Kuwait, because they started the month of Dhul-Qa’dah early this year.

For these countries, the pairing will occur after the day of sighting, so it is certain that these countries will announce on Wednesday - corresponding to June 29 - the completion of the month of Dhul-Qa'dah, and they agree that the first of the month of Dhul-Hijjah will also coincide on the 30th of this June.

Thus, it is likely that the Arab countries will agree on one date for Eid al-Adha this year, which is the day that falls on the ninth of next July, and for some European countries that use astronomical calculations, such as Turkey, they will also agree with the rest of the Arab countries on the date of Eid al-Adha.
