Assimi Goïta finally tipped the scales in favor of the National Transitional Council.

By promulgating

the new electoral law

, the Malian president therefore ratifies the 92 amendments that the CNT had imposed on the 219 articles of the text, to the chagrin of the government, author of the project.

The new electoral law thus includes controversial provisions such as those concerning the Independent Authority for the Management of Elections, three of the fifteen members of which will henceforth be appointed by Assimi Goïta himself.

As also the amendment allocating to the Ministry of Territorial Administration the technical preparation of the polls.

With this promulgation, the transitional authorities wanted to demonstrate their desire to move towards a return to constitutional order.

The power had indeed promised that once this law is in place, the government could quickly present to the West African Community a timetable with the details of the stages until the elections which should in theory devote the return of civilians to power.

Precisely, ECOWAS will meet on July 3 in Accra and decide whether or not to maintain the heavy sanctions that have hit Mali since January 9.

To be seen if this progress will convince the sub-regional organization to loosen the noose around the junta.
