Gayan, in the province of Paktika, is one of the districts most affected by the earthquake which killed 1,100 people in Afghanistan on the night of Tuesday 21 to Wednesday 22 June.

The population of the neighboring town, spared by the earthquake, is mobilizing to deliver aid to the most remote villages.

But the region, which is very mountainous, makes it difficult to deliver humanitarian aid.

"The needs are very great, the international community must help us because Afghanistan is going through a serious crisis and all the people affected are very poor and live in remote areas," said Abdul Jalil Fateh, a local security official.

The trucks of local and international organizations, loaded with food and blankets, must indeed take winding and bumpy mountain tracks to come to the aid of the affected populations.

Breakdowns are frequent.

"The road is very bad, deplores the driver of a stopped truck. The engine has overheated. We bring aid to the victims, we bring bags of flour and oil. "

Aid is still awaited in some villages, where the majority of houses have collapsed.
