What exactly is happening in the Archdiocese of Strasbourg?

A general inspection requested by Pope Francis should make it possible to see things more clearly.

The sovereign pontiff ordered this “apostolic visitation” which was entrusted “to the bishop of Pontoise, Mgr Stanislas Lalanne, who will be assisted by Mgr Joël Mercier, secretary emeritus of the dicastery for the clergy”.

It “will take place from June 27” announced the apostolic nuncio in Paris on Thursday.

The apostolic visits, which consist of listening to the different actors of the diocese, priests, committed lay people, etc., can last several months.

They end with a report addressed to the pope.

The Conference of Bishops of France said "welcome this decision with confidence, pending the report that will be made and sent to the Holy Father".

She indicated that she did not “have any other elements” of explanation.

Management methods in question

According to a source familiar with the matter, the inspection could be motivated by “difficulties in working collaborations”.

“I welcome in faith and trust the decision of the Holy Father Francis”, reacted in a press release the Archbishop of Strasbourg Mgr Ravel.

"I invite everyone to welcome this visit in this "climate of grace", sometimes disconcerting at the time but always salutary in the long run.

According to France Bleu Alsace, Bishop Ravel would have too strict management methods.

It is the second diocese in a few months to be the subject of an apostolic visitation, after that of Fréjus-Toulon.
