The US Supreme Court has overturned liberal abortion laws.

With its decision on Friday, the mostly conservative Supreme Court cleared the way for stricter abortion laws – up to and including complete bans in individual states.

According to the fundamental decision Roe v.

Wade in 1973 derived the right to abortion from the 14th Amendment and privacy protections.

Because of this, abortions were legal in most states up to about 24 weeks of pregnancy.

According to the Supreme Court's recent ruling, the decision-making power will now rest with the states.

Nine can still fall back on the laws from decades ago, 13 other states have passed so-called trigger laws that will come into force after the decision has been overturned.
