European Union EU member states have unanimously agreed to grant Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed on Twitter that it was a "very special and historical moment" and that "Ukraine's future lies in the EU".



On February 28, four days after the start of the Russian invasion, President Zelensky officially requested EU accession, and the decision was made exceptionally quickly.



In fact, it is expected that it will take at least several years to qualify as a full member state, as it requires verification that it meets the EU membership criteria in the administrative and economic fields.
