Straddling Nantes and Saint-Herblain, Place Mendès-France is about to experience a major transformation.

This vast crossroads of the priority district of Bellevue, crossed by line 1 of the tram and surrounded by blocks of buildings, will show its new face in 2026, announced the town hall of Nantes on Wednesday evening.

"The challenge is to open up the square to make it a common centrality and to contribute to a better quality of life: better movement, better housing, access to more shops, hosting economic activities as well as the popular market in better conditions and also bring more public tranquility”, indicates the city, which has unveiled the first computer-generated images of the project.

Work will start in the first half of 2023

This reconfiguration provides for the demolition then the construction of some 300 housing units, the redevelopment of public spaces, but also a reinforcement of the commercial offer (2,500m2) and economic activities (between 1,500 and 2,000m2).

These premises will be grouped together on the Nantes side, and a new mall will be drawn to open up this place, also known to be the scene of drug trafficking and settling of scores.

Work will start in the first half of 2023. A consultation will be organized in particular regarding the development of the Square des Rossignols.

The site is part of the Grand Bellevue project, costing more than 350 million euros.

This large-scale operation, which should last until 2030, has already enabled the construction and rehabilitation of hundreds of homes, the opening of a nursing home, a crèche, and the transformation of the Place des Lauriers. .
