The first marriage of the new Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, was his childhood sweetheart Katia Burgos.

They eloped together at the age of 26, because the Burgos family did not approve of that relationship, which resulted in their son Nicholas, who was raised by his mother Katia and her mother-in-law Clara Nubia-Orego, after Petro joined the rebel group against the government, "M-19".

When news of his arrest and imprisonment reached the family, Katia and her brother-in-law, Juan Fernando, traveled more than 100 kilometers to visit him there. Upon their arrival, Katia discovered that Pietro had been linked to his new girlfriend, Marie-Luz Herran, whose weekly visit to the prison coincided with that of Pietro's family.

cheating husband

Marie-Luz Hern was 10 years younger than Pietro and she was 26 when they met through a mutual friend, when the rebel fighter was undercover in Hern's hometown.

For about a year, Pietro wooed the young woman to finally convince her to cut ties with a friend she was planning to marry, and Hiran only found out that Pietro was married and had a child after he was captured.

Upon learning of this, Hiran described him as a deceiver and asked him to stay away from her, had it not been for Petro's desperate attempts, and after his release he persuaded her to stay by his side.

Finally, the couple reunited and remained together for 15 years, and their relationship continued throughout Petro's political life, and this relationship resulted in two children, Andrea and Andres, who were named after their parents' nicknames in the "M-19" movement.

Andreas and Andres now live out of the political spotlight, with Andreas living with her family and two children in Paris, and Andres a political refugee in Montreal.

current wife

Pietro married his third wife, Veronica Alcocer, in 2003, after his marriage to Hiran fell apart, and the two met for the first time when Alcoser, a law student at the time, 17 years his junior, attended a conference at which Pietro had to take the place of a keynote speaker who was unable to participate.

Veronica was 22 at the time and in her third year at her university, with a young son from a previous relationship.

As was the case with Katia Burgos, Pietro had to win over Veronica's devout Catholic family.

Veronica was born into a family with a strong legal relationship, her father, Jorge Emilio Alcocer, a famous lawyer, and her cousin a former senator in the Liberal Party.

Despite a difficult start, Pietro was finally able to win the heart of his father-in-law.

According to Veronica, her father's death was the first time she had seen her husband cry incredibly.

In his campaign video, Pietro praised his wife for her open personality, love of life and skill in dancing, saying: "I love my beautiful wife, I asked Veronica to dance with me but I couldn't keep up, she is an excellent dancer, but I failed."

He goes on to praise his wife: "Now here we are, 20 years later, having two daughters, and I've already had the longest married life ever."

Pietro and Veronica have two daughters, Sophia and Antonella, who were married to Nicholas.
