Umeå municipality has a large shortage of substitutes in health and care before the summer.

At least 40 nurses will be needed to cover during the holiday periods.

- For us as employers, it is important to be able to offer a continuous holiday period to the regular staff so they can recover after two years of hard work.

We have problems recruiting all care staff.

We see that it is getting harder and harder, says Björn Hammar, operations manager at the health and medical care for the elderly care administration.

So far, the municipality has only managed to hire ten new nurses.

The municipality now offers nurses with more than one year of experience SEK 5,000 every week as a bonus, in addition to the basic salary.

"More difficult every year"

In addition, free accommodation is offered to nurses who come from another place.

These homes will largely be student housing.

- I think it is a great offer.

I hope and believe that it is enough to get more employees here, but you never know, says Helle Forsgren, unit manager health and medical care disability care.

There is also a shortage of care assistants and assistant nurses before the summer.

- It is a challenge to get enough staff before the summer and it becomes more difficult every year.

We would need 200 new people who can work in the home care service as a care assistant or assistant nurses, says Magnus Börlin, operations manager for the home care service in Umeå municipality.

Here it is hoped that the recruitment will be resolved because not all staff must have training, however, higher requirements are placed on delegation for those who have training.

The care association: Must solve the situation in the long term

The Healthcare Association believes that the lack of nurses is not a new problem.

- It is a good offer but you still have to think about resolving the situation in the long term.

All our member groups need good conditions so you want to stay in care and that new ones want to come and work.

We actually have the world's best profession when we have good conditions, says Katarina Nilsson Reian, vice president of the union.
