Road mortality increased sharply in May, by 21% compared to 2019, Road Safety announced on Tuesday.

A total of 293 people died in May on the roads of mainland France, up 21% compared to the same month in 2019, the reference year before the pandemic, Road Safety announced on Tuesday.

The increase is 36% compared to May 2021, a month which had been marked by certain travel restrictions due to the health crisis.

The mortality of cyclists - with 22 deaths - has almost quadrupled compared to 2019, and that of motorized two-wheelers (92 deaths) almost doubled.
