Jean-Luc Mélenchon on Tuesday called on Elisabeth Borne to submit to a vote of confidence by the deputies, assuring that the head of government today had "no legitimacy" to govern, while Emmanuel Macron refused his resignation in the morning.

"Madam Prime Minister, you must come here and seek the vote of the deputies to have confidence", declared Jean-Luc Mélenchon from the National Assembly, in front of the press.

"This woman has no legitimacy", says Mélenchon

Earlier in the afternoon, he claimed: "This woman has zero legitimacy, zero! We are wasting our time, until she leaves."

The vote of confidence is not compulsory for a new government, nor is a declaration of general policy.

But according to Guillaume Tusseau, professor at the Sciences Po law school, it remains "intuitively expected of the Prime Minister".

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the Insoumis but who is no longer a deputy, welcomed the 75 or so deputies of La France insoumise on Tuesday, while the majority of the 150 or so deputies of the New Popular Ecological and Social Union (Nupes) also carried out their arrival at the National Assembly.

The main opposition parties, including LR, have already said that they will not vote for confidence in the government of Elisabeth Borne.
