EU "complete unanimity" to accept Ukraine's candidacy

French European Affairs Minister Clement Bonn announced that the 27 European Union countries had reached a "complete consensus" to accept Ukraine's candidacy for membership in the Union.

During the talks of European foreign ministers in Luxembourg, Bonn, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, said, "The discussions allowed to show broad consensus, and I would even say complete unanimity ... especially with regard to Ukraine and the possibility of recognizing the status of the candidate country at the earliest opportunity."

"These are discussions that will now be held by heads of state and government," he added.

The Latvian Foreign Minister, Edgar Rinkevich, announced that Ukraine would become a member of the Union within a period not exceeding the middle of this century.

He added that granting Ukraine the status of a candidate country for EU membership is a political and symbolic signal, noting at the same time that EU countries must prepare a broad plan that includes reforms and other steps that Ukraine should take in order to join the European Union.

Last Friday, the European Commission recommended giving Ukraine and Moldova the status of candidates to join the European Union, taking into account that these two countries must take specific steps and implement reforms in order to launch negotiations on their accession to the European Union.
