CAIRO

- During the past 24 hours, Egypt witnessed a series of tragic incidents, which began with the stabbing of a university girl in front of the university's walls, and ended with two suicides, one of which was from the top of the Cairo Tower, one of the most prominent tourist attractions in the country.

These crimes and incidents sparked grief and controversy on social media platforms regarding the motives and causes of their perpetrators, especially as they come a few weeks after similar incidents occurred.

The beginning was on Monday afternoon, with a heinous murder in Dakahlia Governorate (Nile Delta / North), when a student at the Faculty of Arts at Mansoura University slaughtered his colleague at the university gate and in front of passers-by.

The Public Prosecution decided to imprison the killer of the student (Naira) for 4 days pending investigations, and charged him with premeditated murder, noting - in a statement - that he confessed during his interrogation to committing the crime.

The statement indicated that the prosecution heard 20 witnesses, including the victim's parents and her brother, who confirmed - in addition to a university student - that the accused regularly attacked the victim, following the failure of their relationship and her refusal to marry him.

Later in Cairo, a young man was killed by throwing himself from the top of the Cairo Tower, which is 187 meters high.

The Public Prosecution said - in a statement - that "the Public Prosecutor ordered an urgent investigation into the incident of a young man falling from the top of the Cairo Tower," noting that the rest of the investigation procedures are being taken, without further details.

Meanwhile, the "Akhbar Al-Youm" newspaper portal reported that the security services succeeded in identifying the young man, who turned out to be an accountant, explaining that the circumstances of the incident are still ambiguous.

This is not the first incident of a person committing suicide from the top of the Cairo Tower.

The same tourist attraction witnessed several cases in recent years, for family, psychological and other reasons.

And the "Masrawy" website - quoting an official source within the Cairo Tower administration - reported that the security of the tower arrested about 20 people over the past year before they threw themselves from above.

In Luxor Governorate (south), a girl was stabbed to death by her brother with a sharp object in the neck and abdomen, following family disputes, local media reported on Tuesday morning.

Also in the early hours of Tuesday morning, a young man in Mansoura (which witnessed the stabbing of a female student on Monday morning) took his life by throwing himself in his own car from the top of the university bridge.

And the young man, Mustafa Tawakkol, had published - on his Facebook page - what indicated that he was about to commit suicide, saying, "I am on the verge of suicide ... I see you well and keep thinking about me and my father does not walk) at my funeral," without further details.

Al-Jazeera Net was unable to verify the authenticity of the attributed incident, which was also reported by local news sites, including "Al-Shorouk" and "Cairo 24".

previous accidents

These incidents recalled the tragic incident in Dakahlia Governorate, in late May, when a mother of her three children was killed and then attempted suicide.

The controversy increased at the time regarding the publication of the mother's last message to her expatriate husband, in which she said that she "wanted to enter her children into heaven, and relieve them of the troubles of the world."

Egypt had also witnessed a horrific murder in November 2021, when a person killed a man in the middle of a street in Ismailia Governorate, one of the cities of the Suez Canal (east of Cairo), then separated his head from his body and walked with him in an unprecedented scene that took several minutes, Amidst the panic and panic of passers-by, who were unable to prevent the crime and seemed to have contented themselves with watching it.

Hours after the Ismailia incident, another no less heinous crime occurred in Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate (Nile Delta / North), where an 18-year-old student slaughtered his colleague.

scary numbers

From time to time, Egypt witnesses suicide attempts, some of which succeed, for economic and emotional reasons, while the official authorities call on those who have such thoughts to go to a psychiatrist, in an attempt to solve their problems and contact the hotline of the General Secretariat of Mental Health at the Ministry of Health, to help those who have psychological problems or a desire to commit suicide.

According to international reports based on data from the World Health Organization published in 2020, the number of deaths caused by suicide in Egypt reached 3,022 cases, or 0.56% of the total deaths, placing it in the 158th rank globally and first in the Arab world in suicide cases.

On the other hand, the Egyptian authorities are skeptical about these numbers, and consider them "inaccurate because they depend on estimates and not numbers" without completely denying the phenomenon, according to local reports.

And in 2018, a study by the Egyptian Ministry of Health - conducted on a sample of 10,648 male and female students, between the ages of 14 and 17 - revealed that 21.5% of secondary school students (pre-university education) in Egypt contemplate suicide.

The Numbeo classification of crime rates among countries indicates that Egypt ranks 65th in the world and 19th in Africa for the statistics of the middle of this year.

The blood of the people is not wasted;

The murderer must be punished by law, which makes it an example for everyone who begs himself to commit a similar crime, #Nira_Ashraf_right will not be lost, assaulting people is a heinous crime, and murder is the most heinous and most heinous type of assault.

We ask God to have mercy on his nation #Naira_Ashraf and to inspire her family patience and solace.

One does not have any appendices talking about #Nira_Ashraf_right and the nightmare that happened in front of #Mansoura_University, nor about the suicide of a young man from the top of the #Cairo_Tower, nor about the accident of running over a girl in Mansoura how many hours ago a young man paraded in his car, nor about a young man who is still committing suicide and wrote on Facebook that they would not allow his father to walk at his funeral. . what's the matter !!

— Khalid Gad (@Khalidgadmusic) June 21, 2022

The first is an Egyptian young man who killed a girl with a knife in front of Mansoura University today, so they said a heinous, cruel and inhuman crime, and condemnation and curses overwhelmed him, and the second, an Egyptian young man, killed two of his colleagues in America with a knife in their home.

Crooked logic and selective sympathy, tailored to the military, will only be seen in Egypt.
