The French president,

Emmanuel Macron

, is intensifying relations with Algeria, overcoming past conflicts and in the midst of the crisis in the North African country with the Government of

Pedro Sánchez

.

While the Spaniard has asked the European Union for support against the freezing of exports to Algeria, Macron has held a very positive conversation this Saturday with his Algerian counterpart.

"The President of the Republic, Mr.

Abdelmadjid Tebboune

, today had a telephone conversation with the President of the French Republic, Mr. Emmanuel Macron, during which they discussed bilateral relations and affirmed

their determination to work for their deepening

" , Algeria has revealed in an official statement.

Far from mentioning tensions, Tebboune and Macron noted "the rapprochement of points of view between the two Presidents and

their great convergence to raise these relations to a level of excellence,

especially after the re-election of President Macron for a new term".

This is confirmed by the statement.

Meanwhile, the Spanish government has not yet succeeded in getting Algeria to deactivate the order for banks in that country to freeze direct debits necessary for Spanish exports.

That means, according to the Spanish commercial office in Algeria, making sales to that country impossible.

According to Algeria, the phone call also allowed them to review "several issues, including the Sahel and the situation in Libya, as well as regional and international issues of common interest."

The fight against terrorism in the Sahel is a priority for Paris and the alliance with Algeria is essential.

In their statement they do not admit having spoken of Spain as the French minister

Catherine Colonna

did last Monday.

She revealed that she had spoken on the phone with the Algerian Foreign Minister,

Ramtane Lamamra

, outside the Sánchez government and adopted an equidistant position.

Instead of reproaching the Algerian for the suspension of trade with Spain, she limited herself to pointing out, according to an official statement, her desire for "good relations between our European partners and the countries of the southern shore of the Mediterranean."

And to show "confidence that the dialogue will allow Spain and Algeria to face the common challenges".

Colonna's management of mediation took place without previously informing the Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares

, according to government sources to this newspaper.

Subsequently, the Algerian state agency charged Albares with derogatory and humiliating treatment.

With this new era of relations, Macron overcomes the crisis that Tebboune opened for him last year due to some statements that he considered offensive.

Macron questioned the existence of an "Algerian nation" before French colonization and was critical of the "political-military" regime in Algiers.

Tebboune withdrew the ambassador in Paris for three months and even closed the airspace to France

, although he did not block trade between the two countries or suspend friendship treaties as in the case of Sánchez, whom he disqualifies for his lurch with the Sahara.

The good relationship with France -after the one already strengthened with Italy- contrasts with the version of the first vice president,

Nadia Calviño

, that Algeria is acting against European partners under the influence of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
