A Sikh temple in the Afghan capital Kabul was the target of a terrorist attack on Saturday.

Local media reported several explosions in the area around Gurudwara, the worship site of the faith community.

Shots were also heard.

Video footage circulating on social media showed a plume of smoke rising from the building in the Karte Parwan district.

The Afghan Taliban-led Interior Ministry confirmed that the area is now free of attackers and the situation is "under control".

A spokesman said the operation had ended.

According to initial information from the ministry, two people died and seven were injured.

So far, the bodies of two attackers have also been found.

According to the spokesman, a group of armed "rebels" used hand grenades before entering the Gurudwara, causing a fire.

Taliban security forces then surrounded the building.

According to the spokesman, the attackers had previously tried to detonate a car bomb in a crowd, but the detonation was triggered prematurely.

The Sikhs are also a religious minority in Afghanistan.

They and their facilities have been repeatedly attacked by Islamist militants.

On Saturday, no group initially accused itself of the attack.
