Pedro Castillo asks for a life sentence for himself if it is shown that he is corrupt
Peru Cover the crisis with a Constituent Assembly
The presidential ordeal of Pedro Castillo has lived a new chapter this Friday in
Lima
with his statement before the Prosecutor's Office, after being singled out for a new corruption when he has not yet served a year at the head of the country.
The teacher from
Cajamarca
walked the few meters that separate
Pizarro
's palace from the headquarters of
the Public Ministry,
finally forced to go since the
Special Chamber of the Supreme Court
did not intervene in time after the protection of rights that his lawyers requested.
"I have nothing to do with irregular acts or corruption. I am an honest man and I will always defend my innocence and honor. Keeping my word, I have come to clarify and collaborate with justice," the president stressed.
The
Prosecutor
's Office previously highlighted that it was the first time that a president at the head of the country was
singled out for "leading a criminal organization
entrenched in the estates of the State."
The interrogation before the attorney general,
Pablo Sánchez,
lasted for four hours, with the intention of discovering his connection with crimes of
criminal organization, influence peddling and aggravated collusion
in the cases against parliamentarians from the
Acción Popular party,
known as
Los Niños,
and against
Juan Silva,
former head of
Transport and Communications.
The former minister, a fugitive from Justice, is wanted by the
Police
after accusations of receiving bribes to award contracts.
"I will always show my face and will be available to the justice system for whatever is necessary. Despite the obstacles, lies and accusations, I ask Peruvians to trust that all the objectives set by the People's
Government
will become a reality" , finished the president.
"The president has answered all the questions," defender Benji Espinoza
confirmed to the press ,
revealing that the president denied his participation in criminal organizations.
The ongoing investigation directly affects Castillo because among those named are also
one of his nephews
and his
former secretary in the Presidency,
the controversial
Bruno Pacheco.
During a search of his office, prosecutors
found a $20,000 package in the bathroom.
The prosecutors have the statements as a protected witness of the businesswoman
Karelim López,
whom the Peruvian media discovered as a visitor to the parallel residence set up by Castillo.
On the other hand, Castillo's defenders argue that the president elected on the list of the Marxist
Free Peru
party suffers discriminatory treatment compared to his predecessors, since no investigation was opened in the middle of his mandate.
However, both
Pedro Pablo Kuczynski
and
Martín Vizcarra
and
Manuel Merino
were dismissed by
Parliament.
Already as
former presidents, several have been in prison
or remain in it, such as the dictator
Alberto Fujimori,
while Ollanta Humala is being tried for receiving money from the construction
company Odebrecht
and the Bolivarian government of
Hugo Chávez
for his electoral campaigns.
Another former president,
Alejandro Toledo,
is awaiting extradition from the
US
to Peru.
The Social Democrat
Alan García,
for his part, decided to take his own life before being imprisoned.
