“It will be more comfortable for the children.
They will settle in the huts, sit in the shavings which are much cooler than the cobblestones”.
Brigitte Vallet, director of the Joan of Arc elementary school in Paris, is reassured.
Since the courtyard of her school was completely redesigned in 2020, she knows that the heat wave that is sweeping France will be more bearable for the children thanks to these new islands of freshness.
Fountains, trees, shadehouses and wood chips have been put in place to cope with the heat wave that has been raging for several days in France and to lose a few degrees.
"Shading clearly causes a loss of several degrees, three to five," explained Raphaëlle Thiollier, "oasis" project manager at the City of Paris.
And on the ground, lighter coverings and natural coverings cause much less heat than tar or flexible plastic flooring which can rise to 80° sometimes to the touch”.
Of the 700 public schools in the capital, 75 now have “oasis” courses.
25 more "oasis" courses will be adapted during the summer.
Ultimately, all schoolyards should be transformed to better cope with global warming.
