This is the first time that Norway has issued general recommendations on children and screen time.

The guidelines are based on the World Health Organization (WHO) and their advice on children and screens.

The new advice is that children up to two years should avoid screen completely.

- Young children need to be in motion and use their motor skills to get a normal growth and development, says Erlend Bø to SVT News.

Digital teaching

The recommendations also apply to older children.

Children between the ages of two and five can sit in front of a screen for a maximum of one hour per day.

Over five years, what is called "passive screen time" should be limited.

However, the screen can be used in digital teaching in school or preschool.

The discussion about screen time has been given new life in Sweden after a group of researchers expressed criticism of DN Debatt against the lack of recommendations on children and screens.

But the Swedish Public Health Agency has no plans to introduce any similar ones in Norway.
