Europe 1 Studio SEASON 2021 - 202207:00 a.m., June 16, 2022

Discover in the podcast of stories "At the heart of History" the origin of the witches of Salem, this affair which still marks the memories of the infamous city of Massachusetts today.

In the eyes of the Puritans, the looting and crimes perpetrated by the natives of the region are the very proof that the devil is at the gates of Salem.

So when the first confessions of witchcraft were made, the accusations multiplied and turned into collective delirium… But how to explain the symptoms of these women as possessed, or even the extent that the affair took on in 1692?

In this second part of the episode produced by Europe 1 Studio, Clémentine Portier-Kaltenbach recounts the terrible consequences of this crisis of Christian faith which affected the world at the time of the Reformation.

In this new episode of the podcast "At the heart of history", Clémentine Portier-Kaltenbach recounts the events that led to the trial and execution of the Salem witches.

Tituba, a slave, was imprisoned: she confessed to having cast a spell on Betty, the town pastor's daughter, who had been showing incomprehensible signs of hysteria for some time.

As the news of his arrest spreads, denunciations come from everywhere.

While the prisons are filling up with witches, the first trial takes place, facing a jury of magistrates who are determined to eradicate Satan from Puritan society... This story is a Europe 1 Studio production.
