Herman Nilica was in high school in Karlshamn when he started using cannabis and hashish.

Over the years, the addiction escalated, and came to move towards heavier drugs.

For the last few years of his life, he was addicted to Oxycontin.

- He could do anything for the tablet.

The craving for it was so strong, and the abstinence was so fierce.

It was all about getting it, says father Gerold Nilica.

The parents became co-dependent

Herman's parents, Gerold and Maria Nilica, have been divorced for a few years and Herman lived with his father in the villa in Skärpinge.

And both parents have had to sacrifice a lot because of their son's abuse.

- We have put so much money, because it is believed that it will be the last payment every time, that now it will be better.

But then a month goes by and he has new debts he has to get rid of, or new fines, says Maria Nilica.

- He broke two of my cars, I have had a burglary at home.

He stole my wedding ring and my engagement ring.

He felt very bad about what he did to us, but he had to, says Gerold Nilica.

Critical of the authorities

The parents describe how they and Herman fought against the authorities for several years, which they believe did not provide enough help to get their son drug-free.

Against the police who "chased him", the judiciary that only imposed fines instead of contract care, the addiction unit that failed to maintain his motivation to become drug-free and the social administration that did not pay maintenance support.

- There is no coordination.

The adult unit, the dependency unit, income support and the police.

Everyone has been involved in Herman's life, but everyone has only blamed each other when something did not work.

And everyone has just hunted Herman all the time, says Maria Nilica.

Could you as parents have done more?

- No, and we have felt so bad for so long, because we have done everything we could all the time.
