General strike in Tunisia: transport and public companies paralyzed

In Tunis all buses, metros and trains are at a standstill.

Many employees arrived late for work this morning, even having trouble finding taxis.

Public companies are all closed

, such as posts and water and electricity companies, and at Tunis-Carthage airport, all flights are suspended.

The strike, a success

In the city center, hundreds of strikers gathered outside the union's headquarters.

It is here that the general secretary of the UGTT Noureddine Taboubi spoke, he indicated that the strike was a real success and had been followed by more than 96%.

Social demands

The majority of the strikers affirmed that their demands were purely social, they ask above all for wage increases while inflation is at its highest in the country.

But the secretary general mentioned in his speech the negotiations between the government and the IMF for a new loan, and he recalled that the union would oppose any reform that it deemed painful for the purchasing power of Tunisians.
