“There will be a fourth dose for the whole population,” the minister told La Sexta television channel, adding that the only thing left to do was set the date.

"A possible date would be around the fall," she added, explaining that Spain was expecting around this time "the arrival of new vaccines adapted to the variants" of the coronavirus.

Spain, like many countries, has opted for a second booster dose – four doses of vaccine in total – only for the most vulnerable people, mainly those over 80 or the immunocompromised.

Some countries, such as the United States, already administer the fourth dose to people over 50.

With 93% of its population over the age of 12 fully vaccinated and 53% of its 47 million inhabitants having already received the first booster dose, Spain is one of the champions of anti-covid vaccination in the world. .

The country, where opposition to the vaccine is almost non-existent, has recorded a total of 12.5 million infections and 107,239 deaths since the start of the pandemic in March 2020.

Madrid adopted a new strategy at the end of March consisting of treating Covid-19 as a simple endemic disease, the epidemiological monitoring of which is comparable to that of the flu.
