He had so far managed to pass between the drops.

Dr Anthony Fauci, the main adviser to US President Joe Biden on the health crisis, has tested positive for Covid-19, the US National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIAID), of which he is the director, announced on Wednesday.

The octogenarian, who has become a central and much-listened to public figure since the start of the pandemic, is vaccinated against Covid-19 and has received two booster doses, NIAID said in a statement.

Her symptoms are mild.

Anthony Fauci "will isolate himself and continue to work from home", according to the press release.

He has not recently been in contact with Joe Biden, it was clarified.

Increase in contamination

The United States is currently registering more than 100,000 new cases of Covid-19 per day, a figure that is also largely underestimated according to experts.

The recent rise has been linked to Omicron sub-variants.

About 300 people still die daily from the disease in the country, but health authorities are now highlighting the many remedies available, including vaccines but also the antiviral Paxlovid in the event of infection.
