• In Mérignac, seven voluntary drop-off points will enable residents' food waste to be recovered.

  • The objective is to reduce the volume of waste per inhabitant, and recover this food waste, in particular into compost.

  • The initiative should extend to other cities.

Seven Voluntary Contribution Points (PAV) were inaugurated on Monday in Mérignac.

They must make it possible to collect the food waste of the inhabitants, and to recover it by transforming it in particular into compost.

"The metropolis's objective is to reduce waste by 15% [per year and per inhabitant by 2030]", explains Patrick Labesse, vice-president of Bordeaux Métropole in charge of collection, sorting, and waste recovery.

In 2019, each inhabitant of the metropolis produced an average of 546 kg of waste.

“We must transform at least 65% of the waste collected in these terminals into compost”, announces the president of the metropolis and mayor of Mérignac Alain Anziani.

"Others may be used for biogas," adds Patrick Labesse.

Extend the project to other municipalities

To use the PAV, nothing could be simpler: just scan the QR Code present on the terminals, or go to the Bordeaux Métropole website.

Once the registration is done, it is possible to choose one of the seven contribution points.

A unique code is provided to the user to open the PAV.

Once a week, these will be collected and cleaned.

The project is still at the experimental stage, which will last three years.

But it should be maintained beyond, according to Alain Anziani, who wishes to perpetuate the installation.

Two other similar initiatives were launched at the end of 2021 in Bègles and in the Benauge district of Bordeaux.

It is already planned that the project will extend to other municipalities and districts of the metropolis.
