A United Nations spokesman stated that the second round of political dialogue in Sudan was postponed indefinitely, due to the refusal of the "Forces of Freedom and Change-Central Council" coalition to participate in the dialogue.

The spokesperson for the UN mission, Fadi El-Qadi, said in a statement to Agence France-Presse that the dialogue session - which was scheduled to take place today, Sunday - has been postponed by a decision of the tripartite mechanism, in light of recent developments.

"I do not have a specific date for the resumption of dialogue sessions," the judge added.

Last Wednesday, the "tripartite mechanism" composed of the United Nations, the African Union and the IGAD Organization for Development in East and Central Africa launched a dialogue between the political parties to put an end to the crisis in this country since the overthrow of the army chief, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, from the civilian government in October of the year. Past.

The "Forces of Freedom and Change-Central Council" coalition announced its rejection of the tripartite mechanism initiative to hold a direct dialogue, but on Thursday held an "informal" meeting with military officials, after it was described as "intense pressure exerted by Western and Arab countries" on the leaders of the coalition.

Al-Wathiq Al-Barir, Secretary-General of the Umma Party, a leader in the Alliance of Freedom and Change Forces, said in statements to Al-Jazeera Net that the discussion that took place between the military and the leaders of freedom and change, and lasted for about 5 hours, was stormy and transparent, and was interspersed with an exchange of criticism regarding what the security and economic conditions had reached after. coup".

Al-Bairir added that the coalition did not get any response to its basic demand calling for the dismantling and ending of the "coup" and the abolition of decisions taken after it, such as re-assigning the symbols of the former regime to the joints of the state.

The position of "Freedom and Change"

Yesterday, the "Forces of Freedom and Change" reiterated that it will not participate in the "tripartite mechanism" dialogue because it "legitimizes the coup".

The leader of the coalition, Omar al-Diqair, stated in a press conference that the Executive Office of the "Forces of Freedom and Change" held a meeting with the "tripartite mechanism" and informed it that the coalition would not be "a party or part of any platform or any operation aimed at legitimizing the coup or building on it."

"We affirmed that we are ready to deal positively with the tripartite mechanism to achieve our aspirations to end the coup and its consequences, and to restore the path of civil democratic transformation with a full civil authority that represents everyone," he added.

Since October 25, 2021, Sudan has witnessed popular protests calling for the return of civilian rule, and rejecting the exceptional measures of the army chief.

The army chief had announced, at the end of last May, the lifting of the state of emergency, and in recent weeks, he released civilian political figures and activists who said they supported dialogue to revive the democratic transition.
