Top start for the first round of the 2022 legislative elections. The French have been voting since 8 a.m. Sunday June 12 to appoint their deputies.

Nearly 6,300 candidates are running for the 577 seats in the National Assembly.

To be elected in the first round, they will have to win an absolute majority or else obtain the votes of 12.5% of registered voters to participate in the second round on June 19.

This election, decisive for French political life for the next five years, nevertheless raises fears of record abstention.

The latter has only progressed since the 1993 election, rising from 31% that year to 51.3% in 2017 and primarily affects young people and the working classes.

From a more practical point of view, a change should be noted compared to the presidential election: the polling stations will close at 6 p.m. everywhere on the territory, "with exceptions", recalls the Ministry of the Interior, especially in large cities such as Paris, Lyon or even Toulouse and Marseille where the voting booths will remain accessible until 8 p.m.
