The polls had announced it and it is not really a surprise.

The New Popular Ecological and Social Union (Nupes) came out on top in the first round of the legislative elections with 26.2% of the vote, ahead of the presidential majority (25.8%).

Two months after Emmanuel Macron's re-election, the presidential majority, mired in controversy, came under pressure from the left-wing alliance Nupes (LFI, PCF, PS and EELV).

This first round of the legislative elections was indeed announced to be very uncertain, the two formations had already been running for a few weeks neck and neck in the voting intentions with Together!, macronist coalition of LREM / Renaissance, MoDem and Horizons .

The fact remains that the first round of the legislative elections was marked by record abstention, estimated between 52.5 and 53%, which should arbitrate the confrontation between the coalition supporting Emmanuel Macron, in search of an absolute majority, and an expected breakthrough of the Allied left behind Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

A record abstention

Participation in the first round of the legislative elections reached 39.42% on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. in mainland France according to the Ministry of the Interior, a figure down 1.3 points compared to 2017 when it stood at 40.75%.

It is also much lower, at the same time, than that of the legislative elections of 2012 (48.31%), as well as the participation in the first round of the presidential election of 2022 (65%).

Five polling institutes even predict for 8 p.m. a new abstention record for a first round of legislative elections, estimated between 52.5% and 53%, more than a point more than the previous record of 2017 (51.3% ).

Our file on the legislative

Finally, these legislative elections promised to be very high risk for the traditional right of the Republicans (LR), whose candidate Valérie Pécresse obtained less than 5% of the votes in the presidential election.

Nearly 6,300 candidates were running for the 577 seats.

Those who will not be elected this Sunday evening will have to, to access the second round of June 19, either arrive in the first two in their constituency, or obtain the votes of 12.5% of registered voters.

Only one question remains: will the Nupes manage to send Jean-Luc Mélenchon to Matignon?
