Warnings of militias evading the terms of the armistice in Yemen

Hans Grundberg

Yemeni sources reported that the Houthi militia is trying to renege on its commitments to the terms of the UN armistice in Yemen, which was extended for an additional two months a few days ago, noting that the militias set impossible conditions for the UN envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, during his recent visit to Sanaa.

The sources pointed out that the militias asked the UN envoy for urgent political and economic treatments before talking about the implementation of the agreement to open roads and crossings, especially in Taiz, pointing out that one of the Houthi demands is to return the Central Bank of Yemen from Aden to Sanaa, and to cancel dealing with the new edition of the Yemeni currency.

The UN envoy left Sanaa, Thursday, without announcing the results of his visit, which came after the militia delegation in Jordan's consultations rejected his proposal to open a number of main and secondary roads in Taiz and other Yemeni governorates.

On the same level, the official Yemeni news agency "Saba" quoted the head of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad Al-Alimi, reiterating his commitment to all the terms of the UN armistice, and support for efforts to reach lasting peace in his country.

The agency quoted Al-Alimi, during a press conference with his Egyptian counterpart, President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, in Cairo today, Saturday, condemning Iran’s negative behavior towards Yemen, and indicated that he had agreed with his Egyptian counterpart to join efforts to secure freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.

For his part, the Egyptian president affirmed that his country supports all efforts to achieve peace in Yemen, according to the references of the Yemeni national dialogue, the Gulf initiative and the executive mechanism, and the results of recent consultations in Riyadh under the auspices of the Gulf Cooperation Council and relevant Security Council resolutions.

Regarding Houthi violations of the armistice, the Yemeni army forces repelled, today, Saturday, a new Houthi attack on their positions south of Marib. However, the Yemeni army forces managed to confront them and inflicted heavy losses on the Houthis.
