The UAE calls for effective climate action to achieve inclusive and low-emission economic growth

 The UAE has emphasized that effective climate action is a key enabler to enhance stability and create new opportunities for low-emission economic growth and prosperity.

This came during the participation of the country's delegation in the fifty-sixth session of the meetings of the two subsidiary bodies of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The conference witnessed the launch of discussions between the states parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) aimed at advancing climate action in preparation for the twenty-seventh session of the Conference of Parties (COP27), which is scheduled to be held in Sharm El-Sheikh in the Arab Republic of Egypt next November.

The UAE delegation to the Bonn Conference is led by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment and the Office of the Special Envoy for Climate Change. The delegation includes delegates from the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), and youth representatives.

The Bonn Conference addresses aspects and issues related to the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement, including transparency, adoption of climate change mitigation and adaptation measures, climate financing, technology and capacity building.

The conference will also serve as a platform for a dialogue on the latest findings of the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC/).

His Excellency Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, and Special Envoy of the UAE for Climate Change, said - on this occasion -: "In line with the vision of the wise leadership, the UAE is keen to contribute to the promotion of climate action through its participation in this important meeting, which paves the way for the convening of the session. The twenty-seventh session of the Conference of the Parties (COP27), hosted by the sisterly Arab Republic of Egypt, as we seek, during the Conference of the Parties, to translate pledges and promises related to climate action into practical results that achieve sustainable and inclusive economic growth.The UAE strategic initiative to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 is an economic model to enable low-emission growth and directing courses of action to achieve sustainable development.We are confident that making the right decisions and implementing the necessary investments will contribute to achieving diversified and sustainable economic growth that provides the various capabilities necessary to support the growth of future industries, gain knowledge and provide new job opportunities.”

He added: "With hosting the upcoming COPs in the Middle East and North Africa, the UAE is committed to working closely with the sisterly Arab Republic of Egypt's presidency of COP 27 to raise the level of aspirations for climate action, reduce emissions and make tangible progress towards assessing global progress in implementing the Paris Agreement." ".

For her part, Her Excellency Maryam bint Mohammed Saeed Hareb Al Muhairi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, said: "The UAE is always committed to motivating and leading comprehensive and effective collective action for the global climate, and in its quest to achieve climate neutrality 2050 at the local level, it adopts, thanks to the vision of the wise leadership, a scientific approach. It is based on accelerating rates of reducing the carbon footprint by promoting the application of sustainable practices, and we are also working on developing the national strategy to strive for climate neutrality.”

She added: "To ensure the participation of all sectors in the strategic direction of climate neutrality, we launched the National Climate Ambition Dialogue, which held its first meeting last May, in the presence of 83 representatives of workers in the cement, technology and energy sectors, in addition to government agencies and stakeholders."

And she continued: "At the climate change conference held in Bonn, we join the call to stimulate action and raise ambition to ensure the success of the next COP27 session in the Arab Republic of Egypt. Climate change is the most threatening challenge to the future and our present, and because its severity is rapidly increasing, we need to act." at a faster pace."

Her Excellency affirmed the UAE's keenness to exchange experiences, define common goals, and explore and enhance areas of cooperation with all countries that put the achievement of sustainable economic development and the interests of people and the planet among their priorities.

Climate action is an essential pillar of the UAE’s economic growth and diversification strategy, by focusing on practical and innovative solutions to reduce the repercussions of climate change, which is one of the biggest challenges facing the world.

The UAE is the first country in the region to sign and ratify the Paris Agreement, and the first country to commit to reducing emissions in all economic sectors, which confirms its firm commitment to climate action.

Last year, the UAE launched a strategic initiative to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, which represents a road map for sustainable economic development for the next fifty years.

The UAE is currently working on updating its third nationally determined contributions, which represent a climate action plan to reduce emissions and adapt to the consequences of climate change, before the COP 27 conference, in line with the results of the COP 26 conference that was held in Glasgow.
