Ulf Johansson is often out hiking in the area where the former mine was located seventy-five years ago.

He thinks that the previous mine has affected nature negatively and is appalled by what a new, much larger mine would mean for the environment and the reindeer herding industry in the area.

"Better invest in tourism - not mine"

He does not think that jobs and side effects that would occur with a mine are sufficient and thinks that it would have been better to invest in tourism.

- I think of those who come after us.

Our generation must save more and not waste.

Think about the environment all the time, says Ulf Johansson.

Dam break in the 50s

In the winter of 1951–52, a dam broke out in Laver with major consequences for the environment.

The environmental group Pite Älvdal is worried that a new mine would mean new dams.

- We will build the dam so that it slopes towards the middle and the water collection will be in the middle of the dam.

In the way we intend to build, we minimize the risk of dam failure.

Then we also look at a dry landfill where there will be no water collection, says Stefan Romedahl, mining manager at Boliden.

But Stefan Romedahl still admits that a mine would have a big impact in the area.

- We will use large areas of land.

So it is with a mine.
