Fourth syringe greatly increases protection

Among those older than 65 years who have received a fourth vaccine dose against covid-19, protection has clearly increased, according to a survey by the Swedish Public Health Agency.

The protective effect against suffering from a serious illness or death increases to over 90 percent according to the survey.

International studies have shown that the protective effect decreases over time and that refill doses are needed, especially in risk groups.

The Swedish Public Health Agency's survey shows that the protection against becoming infected increases to 65 percent after the fourth injection.

The protection against needing intensive care or dying increases to 90 percent.

"It is important to keep vaccination protection at a high level in groups that are at increased risk of serious illness, not least in the face of a possible increased spread of sars-cov2 in society," said Lisa Brouwers, acting head of department, in a press release.
