Violent protests have broken out in India following Islamophobic statements from the ranks of the governing BJP party.

In at least two cities on Friday, police officers cracked down on demonstrators who threw stones at officers.

More than 100 protesters have been arrested in Uttar Pradesh state, according to police.

In the nearby town of Prayagraj, riot police used tear gas.

In the Jharkhand state capital, Ranchi, several police officers were injured by stone throwing.

There were also protests elsewhere, but they remained peaceful.

It was triggered by disparaging remarks by two former representatives of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Party spokeswoman Nupur Sharma was suspended, and the other BJP representative was expelled from the party.

The statements, which referred to the life of the Prophet Mohammed, have also brought criticism to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government from abroad - including from some Gulf states.

In the state of Gujarat, home of Prime Minister Modi, demonstrators called for Sharma to be arrested.

She could not be reached for comment.

Last week she said she didn't want to hurt religious feelings.

The BJP advised its members to be particularly careful when making public statements about religions and distanced itself from insults against religious communities.
