Bishop Martin Modéus received 59 percent of the vote in Wednesday's archbishop election.

He will take up the post of new archbishop on December 4.

Modéus becomes the Church of Sweden's 71st archbishop in an unbroken chain since the first archbishop Stephanus in 1164.

- I am grateful and happy for the support and look forward to going into the task, with God's help and together with good colleagues and employees.

Now comes a time for preparation, reflection and prayer for the accession, says Martin Modéus in a press release.

In the first round on May 18, Martin Modéus received 37.8 percent of the vote and Johan Dalman, bishop of Strängnäs, 28.7 percent.

Both therefore went on to a second and decisive election round - which was held today, Wednesday.

Martin Modéus succeeds Antje Jackelén, who will retire on 30 October.
