In mid-May, the first round of elections was held for the Church of Sweden's new archbishop.

There were five candidates for the first round and those who received the most votes were Martin Modéus who received 37.8 percent of the votes - while Johan Dalman received 28.7 percent.

As no one received more than 50 percent of the votes, the two went on to a second round of elections which was decided on Wednesday.

There, Martin Modéus took home the victory with 59 percent of the votes and Johan Dalman received 41 percent of the votes.

Martin Modéus thus takes over from Antje Jackelén.

He will be received as the new archbishop in a service in Uppsala Cathedral on 4 December.

The Archbishop is the Church of Sweden's foremost representative in Sweden and in international contexts.
