The Iraqi National Security Service announced the arrest of two people on charges of glorifying the Baath Party and the former regime, which sparked critical Iraqi comments on social media platforms for this government action.

This came after a video clip was circulated on the platforms of two people reciting poems glorifying the late President Saddam Hussein, in the southern city of Najaf.

The agency stated in a statement that its detachments had arrested two people after receiving information attached to a video clip about them calling for glorifying the former regime and the Ba'ath party during a gathering of a number of residents of the city of Mashkhab in Najaf governorate, in a peaceful sit-down to demand services and protest against the scarcity of water.

The statement indicated that the arrest took place in accordance with a judicial warrant, after it was confirmed that the two people recited poems and chants praising Saddam and the former regime.

The arrest sparked wide reactions on social media platforms in the country.

Researcher Khaled Al-Ardawi said on his Facebook account, "On the occasion of the National Security's arrest of two people who praised Saddam Hussein, they are said to be from Mashkhab, I say: If the path of the political process continues with this regression, crudeness and badness, there will come a day when our distinguished leaders may have to arrest most of the Iraqi people.

He added, "Before arresting people, they must know the circumstances that led them to what they are. If security solutions served the interests of the ruling regimes, they would have served Saddam and the pillars of his rule. It is amazing how fools follow each other's ways, their personalities are different and their hearts are similar."
