It was a malicious gift when Joe Biden placed the border crisis in Vice President Kamala Harris' lap.

Not much has happened since then.

The Democrats signaled early on that the party wanted to make migration a major issue in future election campaigns.

The key words were: a more humane migration policy and the possibility for the country's more than 11 million undocumented citizens to obtain citizenship.

The result was a wave of migrants that the United States had not experienced before.

In April, more than 230,000 people trying to enter the United States were arrested along the US border.

A, in this context, a new record.

Party comrades critical

Eagle Pass in Texas is one of many typical border towns.

Here is a small stuffy town center with dusty streets, Stetson hats and a constant worry among the 30,000 inhabitants.

Democratic Mayor Yolanda Ramon is tired of his own president and is demanding action.

Safety in the city can no longer be guaranteed, she says.

Her democratic colleague in the neighboring city of Del Rio has the same opinion: Biden betrays his party comrades along the border.

Weak support for Biden

The border issue is one of the most important for voters ahead of the mid-term elections this autumn.

A Gallup poll shows that four out of ten Americans consider illegal immigration to be a major problem.

In addition to stopping the construction of the wall, President Biden has not changed migration policy in any crucial way.

But the signals from Biden have led to the border with Mexico being developed into a largely illegal area.

At the same time, support for Joe Biden has not been weaker than now.

Just over 40 percent of voters think that Biden is doing a good job as president.

Implementing groundbreaking changes in the laws that govern immigration is risky.

A gamble

But it could get worse for Mayor Ramon and President Biden.

Much worse.

A temporary health law introduced by President Trump during the pandemic, which allows migrants to be returned to Mexico without being investigated, has actually expired.

President Biden has outwardly said that the law must end, but to do so at a stage when the pressure on the border is dramatic is a gamble.

A revocation by a Louisiana judge is currently being blocked.

The judge points to high costs for the states and continued health risks if hundreds of thousands of migrants would immediately try to cross the border.

Even if the White House has not commented on the verdict specifically, it will certainly draw a sigh of relief.

Had the law been removed now, chaos would have broken out, which further damaged the Democrats ahead of the midterm elections.

Now the health law may apply after the election.

Decisive states

Before it gets too hot in Eagle Pass and the other border towns, more and more desperate migrants will try to cross the Rio Grande.

The demands from the Democrats along the river are that President Biden personally visit their reality.

Something Joe Biden can be forced to do as more and more states, even deep in the country, are feeling the effects of the migrant crisis.

States that are decisive in the upcoming elections.
