A 30-year-old man was shot dead overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, at Mas de Mingue, a working-class district of Nîmes (Gard), AFP learned from sources close to the investigation.

Alerted by a witness around 11:30 p.m. for a "man on the ground, on the public highway", the emergency services discovered him in a state of cardiac arrest.

The young man was injured by gunfire.

Evacuated by the firefighters, the 30-year-old was declared dead on his arrival at the hospital in Nîmes.

According to a source close to the investigators, the victim "is known to the authorities".

A homicide investigation has been opened.

It is the agents of the judicial police (PJ) of Montpellier (Hérault) who are in charge of the investigations.
