A construction company in the metropolitan area of Montpellier has been sentenced for the illegal operation of a wild dump.

It was located near the natural site of Salines de Villeneuve, classified as a remarkable coastal area, due to its exceptional landscape and natural heritage.

The company and its manager were prosecuted for various offenses under the Environmental Code and the Town Planning Code.

The manager was sentenced to a fine of 8,000 euros, including 3,000 suspended and display of the decision in the town hall of Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone for two months.

The company was fined 20,000 euros and repaired within six months under a penalty of 150 euros per day of delay.

Citizen watch

The court also ordered the company to pay 2,000 euros in damages for the municipality and the France nature environment association, both civil parties, and 500 euros each for legal costs.

This illegal landfill had been the subject of several reports since 2019 by individuals on the sentinelsdelanature site by the France nature environment association.

“It is reassuring to note that citizen monitoring, through the Sentinelles de la nature, combined with the legal experience of France nature environnement, can lead to real sanctions, says Simon Popy, president of France nature environnement Languedoc-Roussillon.
