Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) apparently intends to implement a politically sensitive project from the coalition agreement of the traffic light parties.

As the magazine "Der Spiegel" reported on Monday, citing a draft law before them, Faeser wants to give migrants who have been in Germany for a long time and who are only tolerated there a permanent right to stay.

According to this, anyone who has lived in Germany for at least five years should be able to claim the “opportunity right of residence”.

This should make life planning more reliable for people who “meet certain integration requirements”, quotes the “Spiegel” from the 20-page draft.

In order to be able to live permanently in Germany, the aspirants should receive a one-time and probationary residence permit for one year.

If they can prove during this time that they have mastered the German language and at the same time secure their livelihood, the permit will be granted indefinitely.

Criminals and people who have already tried to prevent their deportation with the help of false information about their identity should remain exempt from the regulation.

In the coalition agreement, the SPD, Greens and FDP had committed themselves to ending the previous practice of so-called chain tolerance.

In parallel to the “opportunity right of residence”, Faeser is said to be more consistently deporting asylum seekers who violate the law.

This is especially true for criminals and threats.

In the coalition agreement, the project was fixed as a "repatriation offensive".
