The Secretary-General of the United Nations: Earth has become unable to keep pace with humans!

In his message for World Environment Day, UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that "the Earth's natural systems have become unable to keep pace with the demands" of humankind.

"We are asking too much of our planet to maintain unsustainable lifestyles," he was quoted as saying by United Nations News. "And this harms not only the earth, but us as well."

Guterres stressed, according to "DPA", that it is necessary to manage nature wisely, and to ensure justice in benefiting from its services, especially for the most vulnerable people and societies.

More than three billion people are currently affected by degraded ecosystems.

Pollution is also responsible for about nine million premature deaths each year.

More than one million plant and animal species are at risk of extinction, many of which will become extinct within decades, according to the Secretary-General.

World Environment Day is celebrated on the 5th of June.

The 2022 celebration bears the slogan “We only have one land” and aims to call for transformative changes in policies and choices to enable living in harmony with nature in a cleaner, greener and more sustainable way.
